Abstract

For centuries, Western theater has been a field where new possibilities of expression are discovered and developed in both practical and intellectual forms. Despite these innovative endeavors, Western theater has maintained its ties to Ancient Greek theater, where it originated. Despite the deep-rooted traditions that stem from Ancient Greek theater, new theater approaches have offered a wide range of alternative explorations worldwide. Further, the influence of Ancient Greek theater on contemporary theater remains strong in the 21st century. The most prominent reason for this continued influence is Aristotle’s Poetics, which is one of the fundamental texts on Ancient Greek theater. The arguments developed by Aristotle in Poetics encompass ethical, political, and aesthetic dimensions. Despite the enduring, significant influence of Poetics, Augusto Boal, one of the most important figures in the search for alternatives in the 20th century, challenged Aristotle and proposed a new paradigm. Through his Theatre of the Oppressed, Boal contributed to contemporary theater by establishing a paradigm beyond Aristotle’s definitions. Boal aimed to formulate responses to experiences of social and political oppression through theater. Augusto Boal became one of the most influential figures in theater in the 20th and 21st centuries through his political actions, educational work, and artistic contributions. The Theatre of the Oppressed system he created serves both as a critical reexamination of the theater approaches that preceded it and as a catalyst for the need and motivation for a new paradigm in theater.

This study examines the Theatre of the Oppressed system in relation to Aristotle's Poetics. Here, the concept of the spect-actor was evaluated to clarify the contribution of Boal’s critical paradigm to the understanding of theater. The consideration of Aristotle’s Poetics is limited to Boal's criticisms of Aristotle. Therefore, this study focuses on the notion of the spect-actor from the perspective of the Theatre of the Oppressed and does not include a broader ethical, political discussion or an evaluation of Western theater in general.

Employing a qualitative research approach, Aristotle’s Poetics and Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed were comparatively examined in this study. In addition to analyzing foundational texts that explain these works, current theoretical and critical discussions on the subject in the literature were also referenced.

The Theatre of the Oppressed system was developed in an environment of dialogue, with contributions from its own audience or, rather, its own spect-actors. The most important factor behind this is the poetics of the oppressed, in which dialogue is dominant and Aristotelian Poetics are rejected. Instead of adhering to the status quo and obediently maintaining the given conditions, Boal, who placed the notions of dynamization and dialogue at the center of his understanding of theater, rejected Aristotle’s oppressive tragic system and offered sympathy rather than empathy, and dynamization rather than catharsis as alternatives. Boal’s most revolutionary contribution to offering an alternative to the Aristotelian system was to investigate and illustrate the possibilities of collective critical thought and collective artistic production through the spect-actor plane that he proposed instead of the notion of the audience, which is confined to a passive role. In contrast to the Aristotelian system, which has continued to function and endure throughout the ages, Boal’s system offers a different understanding at the ethical, aesthetic, and social levels. Despite this, when Aristotle’s and Boal’s ways of thinking are carefully considered, the similarities between them emerge: Both have a vision of “good” to which to tend. Similar to Aristotle, who argued that things tend toward the ideal substance, Boal also sought the possibility of reaching the better not in an impossible universe of ideals but rather in this world. The striking contrast between the two is clear in their differing opinions on how to reach the ideal. In other words, what fundamentally distinguishes Boal’s belief that people and conditions can change for the better from Aristotle’s thinking is the difference in their understanding of the happiness that is targeted and discussed in this paper. According to Aristotle, the condition for achieving happiness is submitting to laws and the established order; for Boal, happiness can be achieved through dialogue.

Dolayısıyla Aristoteles'in Poetika'sı, Augusto Boal'in geliştirdiği sistem içerisinde eleştirilen kaynaklardan biri olmuştur. Bu makalede Aristoteles'in Poetika'sına dönük eleştirel çerçeve Augusto Boal'in eleştirileri ile sınırlandırılmıştır.
