Abstract

The questions of what art is and where it should be sought have occupied the center of aesthetic theory throughout the ages. However, the digital revolution in the last quarter of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century has carried this relationship far beyond a simple instrumental change to an ontological breaking point. While traditional aesthetic approaches focus on the artist's intention, genius, and biography, modern and postmodern thought has shifted its focus to the artwork itself, its autonomous existence, and, ultimately, to the network systems surrounding it. This study argues that the symbiotic bond between art and technology today has entered a “radical dematerialization” phase, eroding art's material existence, and that the work of art has ceased to be a physical object and has transformed into an experience space focused on process, interaction, and software. The main problem of the study is to understand how digital technologies transform art from being an object produced merely with a “new tool” into a communication protocol and a mechanism of cultural memory.

The theoretical ground of the study is built upon the determinative role of technology on social and artistic production. In this context, Jacques Ellul's critique of technology serves as a crucial reference point. According to Ellul, society has transitioned from an industrial stage to a technocratic stage, and this transformation has radically changed art. Art, which possessed magical or religious functions in the pre-technological era, has taken on a playful function under the dominance of the technological system; the production of art objects has given way to program manufacturing.

Furthermore, the dematerialization of art and its relationship with the market are analyzed through Jean Baudrillard's simulation theory. According to Baudrillard, although art has lost its representation of reality and its own reference, it paradoxically continues to gain value. As the physical existence of art fades, the institutional discourse and speculative value surrounding it increase. Baudrillard defines this situation as art transforming into the paradigm of everything that continues to live after disappearing. Therefore, the immateriality of digital art has not destroyed its commercial or cultural aura; on the contrary, it has triggered the desire to possess the “idea of art” itself.

The study emphasizes that the process of “dematerialization of art”, which began with the Conceptual Art practices of the 1960s, has reached its peak with digital art. The early conceptualizations of Lucy Lippard and John Chandler are re-read today through the lens of digital networks. Databases, pixels, algorithms, and light have replaced traditional materials such as marble, canvas, or bronze. To put it in Po-Hsien Lin's terms, art has evolved from an atom-based (physical/fixed) structure to a bit-based (digital/fluid) structure.

This new ontological model is explained by Jos de Mul's theory of digital recombination. Updating Walter Benjamin's seminal essay “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction”, De Mul argues that the ontological model of the work of art in the digital age is a database. In this new model, the exhibition value of the work is replaced by the manipulation value, which is open to the viewer's intervention. The work of art is no longer a finished and frozen object; it is a dynamic process open to constant change, updating, and reconstruction.

Another focus of the study is the spatial and structural impact of the internet and new media environments on art. The internet should not be viewed merely as a logistical channel (a virtual gallery) for exhibiting or marketing artworks. As Boris Groys and James Bridle point out, the internet is a massive memory and production center where contemporary culture is produced, stored, and reshaped. While the physical authority of traditional museums is shaken, fluidity on networks has become a new aesthetic norm. Internet art (Net.art), browser-based works, and software art have eliminated art's dependence on physical space, integrating it into a global communication network. In the words of Manuel Castells, art functions as a bridge-builder, a communication protocol between cultures, individuals, and technologies within the context of the network society.

The dematerialization and digitalization of art have also radically changed the aesthetics of reception. The “distant and contemplating” viewer of traditional art has been replaced by the “interacting and intervening” user of digital art. The completeness of the artwork now depends not only on the artist's act but also on the viewer's (user's) participation. This new form of experience, which activates the brain's neurological processes, memory, and perception, removes the viewer from a passive position and transforms them into an active subject who constructs meaning. As Edward A. Sh anken states, this situation necessitates the development of a “hybrid discourse” between contemporary art and new media art, because technology forces the categories of traditional art history by making the viewer an integral part of the work.

As a result of the research, it has been revealed that the impact of digital technologies on art is not a temporary fad or wave of novelty; on the contrary, it is a structural evolution that irreversibly transforms the production, circulation, and reception processes of art. The point reached today is the phase that theorists call “post-digital”. In this phase, technology is no longer a surprising novelty but an ordinary, invisible, and indispensable part of daily life. The work of art has been liberated from confinement to a physical space; it has transformed into a flow of experience that is independent of time and space, accessible at any moment, reproducible, and transformable.

In conclusion, dematerialization is not the end of art; it is the rebirth of art as a form of pure thought, communication, and interaction by purifying it from matter. On this journey extending from marble to database, from brush to algorithm, art has ceased to be an aesthetic object and has gained the identity of a powerful “interface” that shapes human consciousness and social networks.

Sanat anlayışında yaşanan değişim, Walter Benjamin’in mekanik yeniden üretim çağına dair tespitlerini güncelleyen Jos de Mul’un ‘dijital rekombinasyon’ teorisiyle ilişkilendirilmiştir.
